Sullivan, MO, June 23rd, 2022: Sullivan High School is pleased to announce that Matt Wiegers has been selected to be the next head girls soccer coach. Wiegers currently serves as a counselor at Sullivan High School.
Wiegers graduated from Belleville East High School, and moved on to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville where he graduated with a B.S. in Geography and Secondary Education. He later received his Masters of Science in Counseling from Missouri State University. In 2007, after teaching for 10 years at Webb City High School, his family made the decision to relocate to Sullivan to be closer to extended family. Since that time, he has been a high school counselor at SHS.
Growing up, Wiegers played competitive soccer with various clubs in the St. Louis area, and upon entering high school joined the soccer program at Belleville East High School. In addition to teaching at Webb City, he coached the varsity boy's soccer program for 6 years. Upon moving to SHS, Wiegers held the head boy’s varsity coaching position for 6 years before transitioning to be the assistant girl's soccer coach.
When asked about being the head girls soccer coach for Sullivan Wiegers said, “I look forward to supporting a growing and continually improving soccer culture within the Sullivan community. To this point, I have established rapport with a lot of the returning players and I am excited to have that grow into a meaningful coach and player relationship.” Activities Director, Cody Davis said, “Coach Wiegers brings a passion to coaching that is unrivaled. He knows what it takes to give players and parents a positive experience and will work to make sure all players grow on and off the field.”
The Eagles will look to build on their tremendous 2021-2022 campaign which saw them go 15-9.
